With the announcement of the pending resignation of Comptroller of the Currency, Joseph Otting, it didn’t take long for a replacement to be named; Brian Brooks, the current Chief Operating Officer at the OCC, has been named Otting’s acting replacement; Brooks arrived at the OCC from Coinbase where he was Chief Legal Officer, which suggests an openness to cryptocurrency and innovation more generally; he previously worked at Fannie Mae and before that he was at OneWest Bank where he worked with both Otting and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin; Otting leaves the OCC with a complicated legacy where his focus has been cutting costs and bringing forth CRA reform; Brooks will take over as Acting Comptroller on May 29 when Otting will officially step down.
