Consumer lenders Lending Club and Prosper are reporting growth in originations; for the second quarter Lending Club loan originations reached $2.1473 billion, increasing 10% from the previous quarter and the second quarter of 2016; Prosper originated $774.7 million worth of loans in the second quarter of 2017, an increase from $586 million in Q1 and $445 million in the second quarter of 2016; both companies had high Q1 2016 originations which has kept first half 2017 totals down in comparison to 2016. Currently the student loan debt market is at approximately $1.4 trillion; market share from government lenders has been on the rise under the Obama administration with federal student loans accounting for approximately 93% of the market versus 88% in 2008; in the Trump administration it is likely that private lenders will take a larger share as Republicans favor more financing options from private sector participants; since the November 8 election, shares of private lender Sallie Mae have increased 55%; marketplace lenders are also likely to take part in a market shift towards private student lending, specifically as their student loan offerings continue to expand. Chase has announced it will launch a digital mortgage lending platform in 2017; Chase will collaborate with technology provider Roostify for the new digital lending offering; the digital mortgage lending platform will allow customers to complete their loan completely through online communication with features allowing for comprehensive loan comparison, processing, connectivity and approval. Lisa Servon worked at a check cashing store to identify its benefits and whether or not the financial system should direct consumers to banking services which have previously been cited as less expensive and more efficient; in her experience at RiteCheck Cashing, Servon found three factors that influenced the use of check cashers by the underbanked; costs were lower in comparison to the fees and charges from using a bank; pricing transparency was more clearly provided for check cashing services; many customers also reported better service from check cashing tellers than bank representatives; Servon has published a book titled "The Unbanking of America: How the New Middle Class Survives" which provides full details on the benefits of using check cashing services.
