LendingRobot has announced the launch of a new alternative lending hedge fund; Lend Academy provides details in their article; the new fund will add to the service offerings at LendingRobot which currently include aggregated marketplace lending investment accounts for both retail investors and financial advisors; the new LendingRobot Series fund will invest in online loan origination platforms and offer multiple strategies for investors with expected net returns ranging from 6.86% to 9.66%; the fund is only open to accredited investors and requires a minimum investment of $100,000; it has a 1% management fee with fund expenses of up to 0.59%. Savings rates are low and markets have always been volatile, P2P platforms in the UK have consistently returned 4.5% to 6.5% according to the AltFi Data returns index and so the question remains why aren't financial advisors recommending the P2P asset class; there has been some movement on this front as firms like LendingWell and Octopus offer solutions to better help P2P firms become more attractive to financial advisors; obstacles remain as many financial advisors do not know much about P2P platforms and it will take time for this asset class to be more widely known to the broader advisor. Aegon has announced it will allocate 1.5 billion euros ($1.6 billion) of its investment portfolio to Auxmoney P2P loans; the platform offers average returns of 5.5%; the investment represents one of the market's largest institutional endorsements in P2P loans; Aegon is also involved in a 15 million euro ($16.03 million) Series E funding round for Auxmoney. Zopa, the industry's first P2P lender, has reached a new milestone, originating over 2 billion British pounds ($2.5 billion) in loans since 2005; according to Zopa the firm has originated 300,000 loans from 246,000 borrowers and has 75,000 investors; in the UK, Funding Circle is also close to reaching the 2 billion British pound mark with cumulative loan originations of 1.92 billion British pounds ($2.40 billion) since its launch in 2010. PeerIQ analyzes SoFi's new securitization, SCLP 2017-1; SoFi's unsecured consumer loans securitization portfolio was priced on January 20; the securitization was oversubscribed resulting in final collateralized loans of $655 million; the securitization is now the industry's largest securitization portfolio issuance; it included two rated tranches from DBRS and Kroll; tranche A included loans valued at $504 million with an A rating from both DBRS and Kroll; tranche B included loans valued at $60 million with a BBB rating from both DBRS and Kroll. Boston-based Eastern Bank hired a former Capital One executive, Dan O'Malley, to help the bank learn how it can compete with the growing online lending industry; through his research Dan learned that 5% of Eastern's business customers used an online lender and the primary reason for this was quick access to capital; Eastern now has a competing product to offer small business customers and has even begun to license out their technology to fellow banks; Eastern believes their credit scorecard will allow for banks to utilize their new technology more than they would with an online lender because of their adherence to banking regulations.
