The Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee discussed concerns over consumer credit defaults in its recently released minutes; credit card, bank loan and car loan borrowing has increased and the Bank is also concerned about prolonged interest free offers and eased underwriting standards; stress testing has revealed potential losses for banks of 18.5 billion British pounds ($23 billion) on their consumer credit loans and 11.8 billion British pounds ($15 billion) on their mortgage loans; as the Bank monitors consumer lending, it is likely new constraints will be required to manage risks in the new economic environment. One of the more controversial items of the past year around the world has been the Brexit vote in the UK, and at LendIt USA 2017 we hosted a panel of leading platforms to discuss what the vote has meant for their companies thus far; consensus opinion throughout the panel was that the campaign leading up to Brexit had a worse effect than the actually vote; most investors these platforms work with wanted Brexit, so the vote of leaving the EU was not a surprise to many platforms; origination volumes have rebounded since the vote and both small business and consumer markets are currently strong in the UK; during the campaign for Brexit a lot of uncertainty was in the market but that uncertainty and bad news was short lived; markets rebounded, the bad news cycles slowed and UK MPL platforms continue to show strength in the post Brexit world. Funding Circle and Zopa both discussed the rationale for becoming a bank at the AltFi Europe Summit; Funding Circle's Samir Desai talked about three ways online lenders are collaborating with banks and said, "We at Funding Circle have no plans to launch a bank."; comparatively, Zopa is taking the opposite approach and Jaidev Janardana discussed the firm's bank expansion, noting that the firm will be focusing on savings deposit accounts and will be using deposits to fund loans. Growth Street has appointed Greg Carter to CEO; Carter is a founder of the firm and has been the firm's chief risk officer since its launch; Carter will replace James Sherwin-Smith who has been CEO since the firm launched in 2015; Growth Street is a UK lender focused on SME business lending; it markets returns of up to 6.5% and provides a range of business lending products including working capital loans of up to 500,000 British pounds ($623,763); in 2016 it reported loan originations of approximately 54 million British pounds ($67.37 million). The UK online lender was launched with a focus on secured aviation lending and has expanded to other types of transactions including secured capital equipment and property lending; it says the authorization will help it to expand and further concentrate efforts on its technological development; the firm has reported an 850% increase in loan volume in the last year; the firm has plans to launch in Australia and also expand to other regions. RateSetter has created a new committee to monitor and report on expected losses providing increased transparency for the firm; the committee will include RateSetter's CEO, CFO and various other directors of consumer and commercial credit risk; the committee will provide quarterly reporting on expected losses for the board of directors and also plans to publicly disclose data on its website; additionally the firm plans to enhance its performance reporting with more details on materialized and expected losses; overall, new initiatives around risk monitoring are an effort to more accurately analyze and manage risk following higher than expected losses from loans in 2014 and 2015. The Association of Alternative Business Finance (AABF) has added three new alternative lenders to its membership; new members include Invoice Cycle, Merchant Money and Reward Finance Group; launched in February 2017 the AABF seeks to support UK alternative lending for small businesses. Source
UK robo advisor Scalable has doubled its assets under management in the last three months to EUR 200 million ($213 million); this includes approximately 5,000 client portfolios with an average value of EUR 40,000 ($42,659); the firm says it continues to grow steadily adding EUR 1 million ($1.07 million) in assets under management per day; Scalable launched in the UK in the summer of 2016; it has since expanded to Germany and Austria and has reported significant growth from a partnership with Siemens Private Finance for employee investment plans. Zopa's Jaidev Janardana spoke at AltFi Europe this week on the firm's plans for building a bank; he provides insight in a blog post; the bank will build on Zopa's successful track record in lending with new savings accounts and credit product but the firm will not offer a current account; the UK has been dominant in challenger bank development and the Zopa bank will provide UK customers with another alternative banking option which is currently in high demand in the region; the above chart highlights the competitive advantages Zopa has in the market. UK peer-to-peer lender FundingSecure is a pawn broker providing loans against secured assets including jewelry, property, classic cars and fine art; its representative APR for borrowers is 35.4% and it markets interest of 16% annually for investors with a minimum investment of 25 British pounds; with the FCA approval it plans to offer IFISAs in the next two months.
