While announcing earnings for Q3 Wells Fargo and Bank of America both revealed how important digital channels are to their bottom line; BofA saw mobile banking users jump 11 percent, mobile usage grew at 19 percent and digital payments grew 9 percent in the past year; Wells Fargo saw digital usage grow 2 percent and digital sessions grow 6 percent; the digital trend shows how much banks businesses are changing. From the deal, Finicity will gain data sharing access to Wells Fargo's customer data for its clients which include personal financial management providers and online lenders; the deal is one of many currently underway for Wells Fargo and Finicity as well as numerous other market participants; overall, market consensus from American Banker shows less tension between banks and third party providers with companies such as Intuit reporting an increased interest from all parties involved in improving the experience for customers; American Banker also notes that as data sharing becomes more prevalent there's likely to be an evolution of technology that helps facilitate the connectivity. Wells Fargo is teaming up with Intuit which will allow customers to import account information via an API with Intuit products such as QuickBooks; we've recently seen banks opening up their data to empower customers to share their data with third parties; Brett Pitts, head of digital and virtual channels said in a prepared statement, "This agreement creates a much better experience for our shared customers, gives them greater control over their financial data, and enhances the efficiency of the data-sharing process." Blend has signed new bank partnership agreements and announced fundraising of $100 million; the firm will partner with Wells Fargo and US Bancorp, providing its mortgage software to help improve the mortgage application process for the two large banks; concurrently, it has also completed a $100 million fundraising round led by Greylock Partners that will increase its value to approximately $500 million and allow it to potentially expand to other lending markets. Wells Fargo has been active in biometrics; in 2014 it launched a startup accelerator led by EyeVerify which it now uses for eyeprint verification with its commercial banking customers; it is also working with Kasisto in its startup accelerator and plans to launch some virtual assistant offerings for employees and customers; it has also now announced a refocused effort in its Innovation Group that will be dedicated to AI, payments and application platform interfaces; Wells Fargo's management is committed to biometrics and the firm wants to be a leader in the technology with a specific focus currently on voice recognition. Wells Fargo has hired Peggy Mangot for a newly created position in its innovation group; Mangot will join the bank as senior vice president of the design and delivery leadership team; the innovation group at Wells Fargo was developed to focus on innovation in business models, processes and programs and user experience; Mangot previously worked as chief executive officer of a microinvesting startup platform and also brings experience from Visa and Google.
